  • Slipway Maintenance

This month we removed around 15 tonnes of silt and rocks that have over the years built up around the base of the slipway,  this should now allow for launching and recovery from the slipway at increased states of tide.  It is now also possible to access the beach with vehicles to launch small boats at all states of the tide, even directly into the main Bristol Channel (we do not however recommend this as the sand could be soft) SWPC do not accept any responsibility if members decide to do so.

April 2010

  • Lougher Inshore Rescue fundraising

SWPC organised for the Lougher Inshore Rescue team to fund raise on the Trostre Retail Parc, Llanelli.  The team together with their rescue Boat attended the retail park and raised £270 towards their vital work on the Lougher estuary and surrounding area.

Initially this money will be used to help fund the purchase of children's life jackets for members (see Members Offers page).  We will also be looking to purchase a small inflatable boat for use as a training boat with a view to allowing members to loan the boat to help train their children (without the risk of damaging their own boat), further details will be made available when we find a suitable boat.

February 2008

  • RAF Windsurfing Competition Announced

We are please to announce that we have been approached by the RAF to hold their annual Windsurfing Competition off the Knap.  Taking place over the weekend of Sat 5th / Sun 6th April 2008.

The slipway will be required by the RAF for the launch of their Safety Boat, but other than this there will be no restrictions on members use of the slipway.  We would ask however that all members bear in mind the increased numbers of water users over this weekend taking this into consideration when choosing your cruising / fishing location.

26th October 2007

EXCELLENT NEWS - The Woolworths store in Cwmbran has agreed to support SWPC as one of their nominated good causes.  Over the next couple of months the store will raise money through their in-store collection boxes for our club, if this is successful the support will continue in 2008.

Whilst Woolworths are asking for nothing in return for this support could we ask that all members reciprocate this support by shopping at Woolworths.  The companies Cwmbran branch is the largest in Wales, and one of the largest in the country, consisting of some 30,000 square feet over 2 sales floors including an ordering service and home delivery option - EVERYTHING YOU NEED FOR CHRISTMAS in one store - and FREE parking.

10th October 2007

  • Further damage caused to slipway access barriers

It has been reported that the locks have again been cut off the barrier from the main road to the promenade.  It is believed that this has been done by Welsh Water in order to gain access to their pumping station, investigations are continuing and discussions are being pursued with Welsh Water, if you have any information please let us know as damage such as this will eventually lead to higher costs and therefore higher membership fees.

5th October 2007

  • Slipway Access Changes

Following the destruction of the existing lock and after discussions with the council it has been decided to trial the permanent use of a Combination lock on the promenade barrier.

Not only will this decision eliminate the need to issue and change the keys on a regular basis, it will also make administration easier and allow for a quicker Emergency response should this be needed, the combinations will be given to the appropriate authorities.

In order to maintain security the combination will be changed on a regular basis and members will be advised, in advance, of the date that this will take place.  It is critical therefore that ALL members ensure that their contact details are up to date providing an e-mail or mobile number where possible, in the absence of either of these then changes will be notified by post with the delays that this can incur.

We would remind all members that the combination should not be shared with non members.

The consequences of so doing are ;

  • expulsion of offending members
  • the revoking of our licence
  • increase in membership fees

If this trial is successful then all members who have paid 'Key Deposits' will have them returned early in 2008.

1st October 2007

  • Change to Validity Period and Payment dates for Keys

Slipway keys will now be valid for the periods 1st April to 31st March (previously the validity period was the same as the clubs financial year 1st Jan to 31st Dec), this is necessary to fall in line with the Council Financial year.  For existing members this means that in effect you get an additional 3 months use for free, your existing key fee will cover you until either 31st March 2008 or 2009 depending on whether you opted to pay for 2 years.  This will also benefit new members joining now as they also will not now have to renew their key until 31st March 2008.

29th September 2007

We have added a For Sale and Wanted page to our website.  You now have the opportunity to advertise your unwanted boating items or see if another member has any item that you may want.  Simply complete the advertising form on the For Sale / Wanted page and click SUBMIT to send us your advert, once approved your advert will be posted on our website.

Please note that this facility is for 'Boating' related items only and the club reserves the right not to place any advert that it deems inappropriate for whatever reason.  The club accepts no responsibility for any of the items listed or sold through these pages.

22nd September 2007

  • Damage caused to our slipway access barrier, do you have any information?

Between Thursday 20th September at 8pm and Saturday 22nd September at 9am the lock to the promenade barrier was completely destroyed, this lock, a high security padlock, would have taken considerable force to destroy.  as there was no damage to the barrier it would appear that it was either cut off with industrial strength cutters or 'removed by key and then damaged'.  The smaller lock to the slipway was untouched, so what was the purpose of the damage?

The cost of this high security lock (including its keys which have to be replaced) is in excess of £500, these are costs which if they were to continue will have to be passed on, we don't want to do this so if you have any information please let us know as the matter has been reported to the Police.

31st August 2007 - Watch Tower Slipway

  • We officially take over the Management of The Watch Tower Slipway, Barry.

Due to poor behaviour of users (apparently PWC's) the slipway was closed to ALL users in June 2005, since closure we have been in regular contact with The Vale of Glamorgan Council with a view to entering into negotiations to re-open the slipway.  After numerous discussions and the presentation of a business case to the council we were granted an exclusive Licence (Lease) to manage and use the slipway and immediately surrounding promenade for boating and associated activities.

Unfortunately our Licence legally prohibits the use of PWC's (Jet ski's) at the slipway.  For full details of this and other exclusions / responsibilities please take a look at the Slipway Byelaws.
